Cyberneura

Astragal

A lightweight terminal that can drop a small popover terminal down from the menu bar.

Built to remove the round trip of bringing a terminal to the front just to type one command and then switching back. A tabbed main window and a popover terminal under the menu bar icon, both shown and hidden with global hotkeys.

On macOS you can also install it with Homebrew:

brew install --cask cyberneura/tap/astragal

Supported OS: macOS / Windows

Features

  • A tabbed main window and a popover terminal that drops down from the menu bar (tray) icon, each shown and hidden with a global hotkey
  • Ctrl+Tab switches tabs in most-recently-used order, so pressing it repeatedly flips between the last two tabs
  • Search the output, scrollback included (Cmd+F), and clear the screen while keeping the line you are typing (Cmd+K)
  • Inline images from imgcat (iTerm2's inline image protocol) and SIXEL are drawn in the terminal. Cmd+click a URL to open it in your browser
  • Ask AI (optional, off by default) — press Cmd+I, describe what you want, and Claude types a one-line shell command into the prompt for you to check and run yourself
  • Run a command in a new tab from the command line (astragal -e '...'). Configuration lives in ~/.config/astragal/config.yaml

Requirements & notes

  • The macOS build is a universal binary (Intel / Apple Silicon), signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized by Apple, so Gatekeeper does not warn. Requires macOS 11 or later.
  • The Windows build is an x64 installer (Windows 10 1809 or later). It installs for the current user and needs no administrator rights. It is not code signed, so SmartScreen shows a warning — choose "More info" then "Run anyway".
  • On Windows the popover opens from the notification area icon and the default shell is Windows PowerShell. Shortcuts follow Windows Terminal, so most use Ctrl+Shift (for example, Ctrl+Shift+F to search and Ctrl+Shift+K to clear).
