A native macOS LAN scanner that lists what is connected to your network.
It finds devices through ICMP / ICMPv6 and the ARP / NDP caches, and shows their IP addresses, MAC address and vendor, reverse DNS, mDNS, and SMB names, and the state of common ports. Rows appear as devices are found, without waiting for the scan to finish.
Features
- IPv4 hosts are found with ICMP echo requests and the ARP cache, IPv6 hosts with ICMPv6 to the all-nodes multicast group (
ff02::1) and the NDP cache. Hosts that ignore ping are still picked up from the ARP cache - Vendor names from the MAC address (bundled IEEE OUI data). Names are resolved through reverse DNS, mDNS, and SMB while discovery is still running
- Round-trip times are measured again after discovery, so they are comparable to
ping(8) - Checks SSH (22), HTTP (80), HTTPS (443), and Screen Sharing / VNC (5900)
- Give each device a name and a note — filed under its MAC address where one is known, so they follow the machine when its IP address changes. Scan ranges take a CIDR, a span, or a single address
- Command line (
octetly lookup / octetly search) to find a .local device by name across a VPN, with --json output
Requirements & notes
- A universal binary (Intel / Apple Silicon), signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized by Apple, so Gatekeeper does not warn. Requires macOS 14 or later.
- The first scan may trigger macOS's Local Network permission prompt.
- The command-line tool is installed to
/usr/local/bin/octetly from the menu, Octetly → Install Command-Line Tool…. - Scan results are never sent anywhere.
